This bus was purchased from Indianapolis Transit System in 1978. This was my first forty-footer and wide body bus. I was very excited. A few years earlier I had borrowed a 5301 from Community Charter. It was an ex Santa Monica 5307. I really liked that bus as it had all the cool features of a 5301; getting 5400, then, was exciting to me.
Fun Fleet Bus #5400 was Indianapolis 1404 originally. I actually bought two buses and drove them back to California. Unfortunately, the other one had an engine failure due to a bad vernatherm valve.
After getting #5400 home, I decided to paint it into the LAMTA two tone green colors and number it "5400". We all loved this bus. It had a smokey engine so I cnabnged the power plant.
He told me, "Mike, the bus fans will notice the b & w "Coming home..." picture raises some questions, as does the "Hanky Panky" clip that made #5400 a movie star. This video explains it all.
This bus was used in the movie "Hanky Panky" with Gene Wilder. this was my first movie shoot.
I also installed a Nathan 5-chime horn on 5400 and had a lot of fun installing and designing the system to run it.
I also put on a train bell. It was fun.
I also re-upholstered this bus with green seats.
This was a third series 5301 being a 1962 and still had its dip shift transmission control.
Over ten years ago, Fun Fleet Bus #5400 was sold to a local church here in Perris.
It took some crazy internet investigation and negotiating, but #5400 was about to come home.
